Official requirements & sources — 2026

  • When it's required: most Visitor (V) and Migrant (M) visas require a health policy valid for the visa's duration
  • Coverage: full coverage within Colombian territory for accidents and illness, including hospitalization and repatriation
  • Existing plans: an international policy can qualify if it meets the coverage and territory rules
  • Local plans: an EPS or prepaid plan (prepagada) may not, on its own, satisfy the visa coverage requirement
  • Why it matters: an incomplete or non-compliant policy is a common cause of delay or rejection

Health Insurance

Health Coverage & Immigration Compliance.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Resolution 5477) mandates comprehensive health insurance for all visa applicants. We ensure your policy meets strict legal standards regardless of your visa category.

Why is this critical for everyone?

In recent years, Colombian immigration authorities have significantly tightened regulations regarding foreigner health coverage. The goal is to ensure that temporary visitors and residents do not burden the public health system.

The most common mistake: Applicants often submit standard travel insurance or credit card coverage. These are summarily rejected because they lack specific clauses required by Colombian law, such as unlimited coverage within national territory or explicit repatriation terms.

The "Repatriation" Clause?

This is the single most important technical requirement for any visa type (Student, Work, Partner, etc.). Your certificate must explicitly state coverage for:

  • Medical Repatriation: Transport to your home country in case of severe illness.
  • Mortal Remains: Transport of body/ashes in case of death.
Warning

EPS (Public Health) does not cover repatriation. Therefore, even if you are eligible for EPS, you still need a private policy for the visa application.

What Cancillería actually checks

Core Policy Requirements

Whatever your visa category, your health insurance certificate has to pass these four checks before the Cancillería will accept it.

Coverage Zone

Must explicitly name Colombia, or be a worldwide policy. A regional plan that excludes Colombia won't be accepted.

Validity Period

Active for the full period of your visa — at least one year, or the total duration of your stay. Note: your visa can be limited to how long your coverage lasts.

Scope of Risk

Must cover accident, illness, hospitalization, disability, maternity and emergency care — named on the certificate.

Format

Issued in Spanish or English (or officially translated), clearly showing the insured's full name — one certificate per applicant.

And the check that fails most policies: repatriation.

It has two parts — medical repatriation to your home country, and repatriation of mortal remains. Colombia's public health system (EPS) doesn't include it, which is exactly why so many generic travel or local policies get rejected.

Who this applies to

Universal Scope of Application

The health-coverage requirement runs across Colombia's entire visa regime. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs applies it to all major categories — Visitor, Migrant and Resident.

Type V

Visitor Visas

For temporary stays, with no intent of permanent residence.

  • Tourism & Business
  • Student / Academic Exchange
  • Digital Nomads
  • Medical Treatment
  • Administrative Procedures
Type M

Migrant Visas

For those intending to establish themselves in Colombia.

  • Spouse / Partner of a National
  • Work / Labor
  • Retirement / Pensioner
  • Real Estate Investment
  • Partner / Business Owner
Type R

Resident Visas

For permanent establishment and indefinite stay.

  • Accumulated Time (5 Years)
  • Parent of a Colombian National
  • Direct Foreign Investment
  • Returning Nationals

Strategic Considerations for All Applicants

Family Groups & Beneficiaries

If you are applying with beneficiaries (spouse, children), each individual must have their own certificate of coverage. A policy that only names the primary holder, even if it covers "family", may be rejected if beneficiaries are not explicitly listed on the declaration page.

Timing Your Purchase

Do not buy a policy starting "today". The policy start date should align with your estimated visa approval or entry date. However, the certificate must be active or ready to activate at the moment of application upload.

Deductibles & Co-pays

While the Ministry does not explicitly regulate deductible amounts, we advise against policies with excessively high deductibles (e.g., >$5,000 USD). Officers may view this as "insufficient solvency" to access healthcare if an emergency actually occurs.

Pre-Existing Conditions

For older applicants or those with chronic conditions, standard travel insurance often excludes pre-existing issues. This can be grounds for rejection if the officer believes you will become a burden on the state. Seek specialized "Expat" health plans that cover maintenance medication.

How it works

Compliance Workflow

From choosing a plan to landing in Colombia — four steps to a certificate that's actually accepted.

Select Coverage

Choose a plan that explicitly includes repatriation and meets the validity period your visa category requires.

Obtain Certificate

Get the "Summary of Benefits" or "Visa Letter" from the insurer — a PDF that clearly states your full name and coverage.

Upload to Cancillería

Submit the certificate under the "Health Insurance" section of the digital visa portal during your application.

Entry Verification

On arrival in Colombia, immigration may ask for printed proof of active coverage. Keep a copy handy.

Steps 1–3 are the technical part — and the part we handle for you, at no extra cost. You focus on your move; we make sure the certificate is right and filed.

Let USP handle it

Establish your base in Colombia

Secure your Digital Nomad Visa (V) with comprehensive legal structuring. We ensure compliance for remote professionals and entrepreneurs operating from Colombian territory.

Digital Nomad Visa · Type V

Eligibility Profile

An immigration category for foreign nationals who want to live in Colombia while working remotely for companies based abroad.

Remote Employees

Professionals with an active employment contract with a foreign company, authorized to perform their duties remotely.

Freelancers

Independent contractors providing services to foreign entities or clients, with no subordinate employment relationship.

Digital Entrepreneurs

Partners or owners of a foreign company who manage their business operations entirely through digital channels.

Most nomad rejections trace back to one gap: a policy without repatriation. Standard travel insurance and credit-card coverage usually miss it — so we check for it before anything is filed.

The coverage side

What you'll need on the health-insurance front.

The Digital Nomad Visa requires health coverage that meets Cancillería's rules — the part most remote workers underestimate until filing. We handle it so your visa file isn't held up by the certificate.

  • An international policy covering Colombia for your full visa term — multi-year available, so a short policy can't shorten your visa
  • All seven required risks — repatriation included
  • An official certificate, ready to upload with your application
  • Arranged through Continental Assist — at no extra cost to you

Applying with your family?

Each applicant — spouse, partner or dependents — needs their own certificate showing their full name. We arrange the whole group together, so nobody's left off the file.

Nomad-specific

Quick questions

Can I get coverage for my full visa period (up to ~2 years)?
Yes — multi-year terms are available, which matters because your visa can be limited to how long your policy lasts. We match the term to the visa length you're after.
I travel a lot — does the policy cover me outside Colombia too?
The plans we arrange are built for international travelers, so coverage typically follows you across borders, not just inside Colombia. We confirm the exact geographic scope on your certificate.
How quickly can I get the certificate to upload?
Once your plan and term are confirmed, issuance is fast — you get the official certificate ready to attach to your application. We start early so timing never blocks your filing.

Retire in Colombia with absolute peace of mind.

The Migrant (M) Visa for Retirees demands specific medical coverage. We offer policies with extended age limits, access to top specialists, and full compliance with Resolution 5477.

Retirement Visa · Type M · "Pensionado"

Eligibility Profile

Designed for foreign nationals who receive a guaranteed monthly lifetime income from a pension or retirement fund.

State Pensioners

Individuals receiving a retirement pension from a foreign government, public institution, or social security administration.

Private Funds

Retirees receiving a lifetime pension from a private financial institution or corporate pension fund (requires specific validation).

Beneficiaries

Spouses and dependents can be included in the application, provided the main applicant demonstrates additional financial solvency.

The retiree trap: most travel policies stop enrolling at lower ages. Many insurers cap new policies well before retirement age — leaving applicants stuck at filing. The plans we arrange accept applicants up to age 85, with adjusted rates from 76.

The coverage side

What you'll need on the health-insurance front.

The Retirement Visa asks for health coverage that meets Cancillería's rules — and for retirees, age limits and the international-policy requirement are where most plans fall short. We handle both, so your file isn't held up by the certificate.

Request a Pre-Check Full visa requirements →
  • An international policy — for the Retirement Visa, a local Colombian policy generally isn't accepted
  • Coverage available up to age 85, with adjusted rates from 76
  • All seven required risks — repatriation included
  • Arranged through Continental Assist — at no extra cost to you

Retiring with your spouse or dependents?

Each beneficiary on the application needs their own certificate showing their full name — a family policy naming only the holder won't carry the group. We arrange everyone together, including beneficiaries over 75.

Retiree-specific

Quick questions

I'm over 75 — can I still get a visa-compliant policy?
Yes. The plans we arrange accept applicants up to age 85, with adjusted rates from 76 — one of the few visa-compliant options at that age range. We confirm your exact terms in the formal quote.
Can I use Medicare or my home country's public health coverage?
Generally no — public systems like Medicare don't cover you outside your home country and don't meet Cancillería's criteria. The Retirement Visa expects an international policy that explicitly covers Colombia, with all required risks.
I have pre-existing conditions — what's actually covered?
Honest answer: visa-compliant plans include limited assistance for pre-existing or chronic conditions — they satisfy the visa requirement but aren't full private health insurance. Tell us your situation upfront and we'll match the plan that handles it best, and say clearly what it won't cover.

Strategic Investment, Secure Residency.

We guide international investors through the complex regulatory landscape of Colombia, ensuring that your capital allocation secures your immigration status.

Investor Visa · Type M / R

Investment Channels

The Colombian government offers residency pathways to foreign nationals who make a significant economic contribution through registered Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Real Estate Investment

Acquisition of real property in Colombia. The investment must exceed 350 SMMLV for a Migrant (M) Visa.

Corporate Investment

Acquisition of shares in an existing Colombian company or the incorporation of a new entity. Minimum capital: 100 SMMLV.

Resident (R) Qualification

Direct "Resident" status (skipping the M visa) is possible for larger investments (usually +650 SMMLV), granting permanent rights immediately.

Don't let a six-figure investment stall over the cheapest document in the file. The health certificate is the smallest piece of an investor application — and one of the most common reasons filings get held up. We make sure it's compliant before anything is submitted.

The coverage side

What you'll need on the health-insurance front.

Whether you file as a Migrant or go straight for Resident status, your application needs health coverage that passes Cancillería's checks. We align the policy with your visa strategy and timeline — so the certificate never delays the investment.

Request a Pre-Check Full visa requirements →
  • An international policy covering Colombia for your full visa term — multi-year terms available to match M visas
  • All seven required risks — repatriation included
  • Certificates for you and every family member on the application
  • Arranged through Continental Assist — at no extra cost to you

Investing as a family?

Spouses and dependents included as beneficiaries each need their own certificate showing their full name. We arrange the whole group in one pass, aligned with the main application.

Investor-specific

Quick questions

Does my coverage have to match my visa length?
Yes — and it cuts both ways: your visa can be limited to how long your policy lasts. Investor M visas can be granted for multiple years, so we typically match them with multi-year coverage instead of a 1-year policy that shortens the visa.
I split my time between countries — does the coverage travel with me?
The plans we arrange are international by design, so coverage typically follows you across borders rather than applying only inside Colombia. We confirm the exact geographic scope on your certificate before you file.
I'm going straight for the Resident (R) visa — anything different?
The compliance checks are the same — the difference is horizon. An R visa is long-term status, so we set up your coverage with renewal in mind (multi-year terms where it makes sense), and keep it aligned so your status is never exposed.

Establish permanent Roots in Colombia

The Resident (R) Visa is the ultimate immigration status, offering indefinite stay and an open work permit. We manage your transition from temporary to permanent status with legal precision.

Resident Visa · Type R

Paths to Residency

The Resident (R) Visa is Colombia's highest immigration status — indefinite stay and an open work permit. Here's how applicants typically qualify.

Accumulated Time

After holding Migrant (M) status for the required period — commonly five years, less for some categories such as spouses or parents of Colombian nationals.

Parent of a Colombian National

Foreign parents of a Colombian-born child can qualify for direct Resident status under this dedicated route.

Direct Foreign Investment

Larger registered investments (usually +650 SMMLV) qualify for immediate Resident status — skipping the Migrant stage entirely.

Applying for R after years on an M visa? Your EPS won't carry the application. Most R applicants already live here and assume their local EPS affiliation satisfies the requirement — it doesn't, because EPS lacks repatriation. The certificate still has to pass the same checks as every visa.

The coverage side

What you'll need on the health-insurance front.

Your R application needs a compliant certificate like any other visa — but residency is a long horizon, so we also set up your coverage strategy for the years after approval, not just the filing date.

Request a Pre-Check Full visa requirements →
  • An international policy that passes all of Cancillería's checks for your R application
  • Multi-year terms with a renewal strategy — built for indefinite status
  • All seven required risks — repatriation included
  • Arranged through Continental Assist — at no extra cost to you

Settling down with your family?

Each beneficiary on the application needs their own certificate with their full name — and residency timelines can differ per family member. We arrange the group together and keep every certificate aligned.

Resident-specific

Quick questions

I've lived here for years and have EPS and prepagada — can I use them for the R application?
EPS alone doesn't meet the requirement — it lacks the repatriation clause. A private prepagada may also fall short of the criteria depending on the certificate it issues. Send us what you have and we'll review it honestly before you file.
The R visa is indefinite — how long does my coverage need to last?
For the filing, your certificate needs to satisfy the validity check like any visa. For the years after, we set up multi-year terms with renewals, so your coverage horizon matches your residency instead of expiring quietly behind it.
Once I'm a resident, can I just switch to the local health system?
Honest answer: as a resident you can join Colombia's local system for day-to-day care, and many residents do. What it won't give you is repatriation or international coverage. We'll tell you plainly which combination fits your situation — even when that means selling you less.

Why You Need Specialized Health Insurance

Securing health insurance is essential because it is mandatory to meet and exceed the official requirements for your Colombian visa application.

A visa-compliant health policy is necessary to ensure that you have comprehensive protection while in Colombia. Specifically, the coverage is required to handle critical situations such as medical emergencies, hospitalization, and repatriation.

Furthermore, different visa applicants—whether digital nomads, retirees, investors, or residents—have unique profiles that require tailored coverage (such as support for pre-existing conditions for retirees) to ensure they have the necessary support while fulfilling their visa obligations.
