Immigration Guidelines - FAQ

General Guidelines

Fundamental concepts about the Colombian immigration landscape.

What is the fundamental difference between a Visitor (V) and a Migrant (M) Visa?
expand_more
A Visitor (V) Visa is designed for temporary stays without the intention of establishing domicile, and does not accumulate time toward residency. Conversely, a Migrant (M) Visa is for foreign nationals seeking to establish themselves in Colombia for medium to long-term activities, and generally allows the holder to accumulate time toward a Permanent Resident (R) Visa.
Can I legally work or conduct business in Colombia with a visa?
expand_more
Work authorization depends entirely on the visa category. Resident (R) Visas allow unrestricted lawful employment and business activities in Colombia.
Certain Migrant (M) Visas also grant open work authorization, including visas based on marriage to a Colombian national, permanent partnership with a Colombian national, or parenthood of a Colombian national. Other Migrant (M) and Visitor (V) Visas may authorize work only under specific conditions, such as for a sponsoring employer, an approved independent professional activity, or a particular business purpose authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Regardless of the visa category, foreign nationals must comply with any professional, licensing, registration, or validation requirements applicable to their occupation in Colombia before legally practicing regulated professions or carrying out certain professional activities.
Is it possible to obtain a visa by investing in real estate or starting a business?
expand_more
Yes. The Colombian government offers the Migrant (M) Real Estate Investor Visa for direct property investments (minimum 350 SMMLV) and the Migrant (M) Partner or Owner Visa for corporate investments in legally constituted commercial entities (minimum 100 SMMLV). Both require strict adherence to foreign exchange regulations via the Central Bank.
Can I include my family members in my visa application?
expand_more
Only certain Colombian visa categories allow the principal visa holder to sponsor eligible family members through a Beneficiary Visa. Eligibility depends on the specific visa type held by the principal applicant and the relationship with the beneficiary.
In general, beneficiaries may include a spouse, permanent partner, and dependent children, provided they meet the applicable requirements. However, not all visa categories permit beneficiaries, so eligibility must be assessed based on the specific visa being requested or already granted. Beneficiary visas do not automatically grant work authorization unless expressly permitted by Colombian immigration regulations.
How long does the visa application and evaluation process take?
expand_more
Once an application is successfully submitted and the government study fee is registered, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs legally has up to 30 calendar days to process and issue a formal decision on the application.
