Spend enough time here, and Colombia sees you as a taxpayer.

183days = tax resident

Spend 183 days or more in Colombia within any rolling 365-day period and you're generally treated as a tax resident — which means the DIAN expects an annual return on your worldwide income and assets. If those days straddle two calendar years, residency starts in the second year.

But residency is only half the question. For the 2025 tax year — the return filed in 2026 — you generally have to file if your gross assets at December 31, 2025 topped COP $224,095,500 (4,500 UVT, ≈ US$61k) or your income, card spend, purchases or bank deposits during 2025 topped COP $69,718,600 (1,400 UVT, ≈ US$19k) — and even some non-residents must file after selling property or earning Colombian-source income that wasn't fully covered by withholding.

Filing isn't the same as paying. Plenty of people file and owe little or nothing. We tell you, in plain terms, which applies to you — and then we handle it.

General information, not tax advice. Thresholds are set in UVT and change every tax year; USD figures are indicative only. Whether you're a tax resident — and what you owe — depends on your specific situation.

We don't just file. We already know your story.

Most people hand their taxes to someone who has never seen the rest of their life in Colombia. With USP, the team filing your return is the same team that handled your visa and set up your company.

"That context is the difference between a generic filing and one that actually fits your situation."

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to file taxes in Colombia if I'm not a citizen?
It's about time and economic ties, not nationality. You're generally a tax resident after 183+ days in any rolling 365-day period, and you typically have to file once your gross assets tops ~COP $224.09M or your income/spending tops ~COP $69.7M for the year. Some non-residents must file too — for example after selling property or earning from Colombian clients. We confirm exactly what applies to you.
When is the filing deadline?
For the 2025 tax year, individual filing deadlines run from August 12 to October 26, 2026, assigned by the last two digits of your NIT (your tax ID within the RUT). Getting the RUT can itself take weeks, so we start early to avoid late-filing penalties.
I own assets outside Colombia — do I have to report them?
If you're a Colombian tax resident and your foreign assets exceed 2,000 UVT (about COP $104.7M for 2026), you must file a separate annual return of assets held abroad (declaración anual de activos en el exterior, Form 160), on top of your income tax return. Above 3,580 UVT (about COP $187.5M for 2026) you also have to itemize each asset — its type, country and value; below that you can report them as a total. It's a reporting obligation, not a tax, but missing it carries its own penalties. We check whether it applies and file both together.
What if I haven't filed in previous years?
It's more common than you'd think and usually fixable. Unfiled years can draw penalties — and in serious cases the authorities can pursue assets — so the sooner we assess your prior years and get you current, the better.
How much does it cost?
An annual income tax return starts from $380 / year. A formal consultation is $150 / session. Company bookkeeping is quoted by complexity.
Can you handle my company's accounting too?
Yes — monthly and annual filings plus clean books for your Colombian SAS, coordinated with the rest of your setup.
Do you handle double taxation or cross-border tax matters?
Honest answer: complex international planning and double-taxation strategy are outside our core scope. We'll flag it clearly and refer you to a specialist when that's what you need.
Can I hire USP just for taxes, without a visa or legal case?
Yes. Many clients start with taxes alone. You don't need an existing case with us.

Let's get your tax situation sorted.

Tell us your situation — time in Colombia, where your income comes from, whether you have a company. We'll tell you what you actually need, honestly.
