If you’ve been researching the Colombia Digital Nomad Visa in 2026, you’ve probably found a lot of recycled guides repeating the same requirements from 2022. Here’s the problem: while the law hasn’t changed, the way it’s being applied has — and that distinction matters more than most agencies are willing to admit.
At USP Consultancy, we’ve handled dozens of Digital Nomad Visa applications since Resolution 5477 took effect. This guide reflects what’s actually happening at Cancillería right now, not just what the regulation says on paper.
What Is the Colombia Digital Nomad Visa?
The Digital Nomad Visa (Visa V — Nómadas Digitales) is a Visitor-type visa introduced under Resolution 5477 of 2022. It allows foreign nationals to live in Colombia for up to two years while working remotely for employers or clients based outside the country.
It does not authorize local employment or services to Colombian companies. Your income must come entirely from foreign sources.
The 2026 Reality: What Changed in Practice
Here’s what most guides won’t tell you.
The resolution itself has not been amended. The legal text is the same one published in 2022. However, starting in mid-2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) began applying stricter admissibility criteria in practice — particularly regarding the type of work being performed.
What we’re seeing on the ground in 2026:
Applications with a clear tech or digital profile are being approved consistently. If your work is in software development, IT, digital marketing, content creation, or you can demonstrate a visible digital business, the process remains viable.
Applications outside the tech/digital scope face significantly higher rejection risk. Remote consultants, coaches, freelance writers, and other professionals whose work is not obviously “digital” in nature are encountering more scrutiny — even when they meet every written requirement.
This isn’t a formal policy change. It’s a shift in how Cancillería interprets the phrase “remote work or telecommuting services through digital media and the Internet” in the original resolution. The practical effect is that profile matters now more than it did in 2023 or 2024.
Our recommendation: Before you apply, have your profile assessed by someone who knows what’s currently being approved. A rejection not only wastes your application fee — it creates a record that can complicate future visa applications in Colombia.
Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa in 2026
The formal requirements remain as follows:
Eligibility:
You must hold a passport from a country that does not require a short-stay visa to enter Colombia (this includes the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, and most of Latin America). You must work remotely for a foreign company or client, or run a digital business registered outside Colombia.
Income:
You need to demonstrate monthly income of at least three times the Colombian minimum wage (SMMLV). With the 2026 minimum wage set at COP $1,750,905, the threshold is approximately COP $5,252,715 per month — roughly USD $1,420 at the average 2026 exchange rate of approximately COP $3,700 per dollar. This must be shown through bank statements from the last three months.
Documents:
You will need your valid passport (at least 6 months validity), a passport-style photo (3×4 cm, white background), bank statements proving consistent income, a letter from your employer or clients confirming your remote work arrangement (in English or Spanish), international health insurance covering accidents, hospitalization, repatriation, and medical evacuation for the full duration of your stay, and an apostilled criminal background check from your country of residence.
Important 2026 updates on documents:
Since mid-2024, apostilled criminal background checks are required — including FBI background checks for U.S. citizens. Health insurance policies must now explicitly include repatriation coverage and medical evacuation. Bank statements and employment letters from non-Spanish-speaking countries should ideally be officially translated and notarized.
Application Process: Step by Step
Step 1 — Prepare your documents. Gather everything listed above. Save all files in PDF format. The total upload size must not exceed 5 MB. Make sure documents are legible and properly formatted.
Step 2 — Apply online. Go to the official Cancillería visa portal and complete the application form. Select Visa Type V and the Digital Nomad subcategory. Upload all supporting documents and pay the study fee (approximately USD $52).
Step 3 — Wait for review. Processing typically takes 2 to 6 weeks. Cancillería may request additional documents during this period. Respond promptly — delays can result in your application being archived.
Step 4 — Pay the issuance fee. If approved, you’ll pay the visa issuance fee of approximately USD $177. Your visa will be issued electronically.
Step 5 — Register with Migración Colombia. Within 15 calendar days of your visa being issued (or within 15 days of entering Colombia if you applied from abroad), you must register your visa at a Migración Colombia office and apply for your Cédula de Extranjería (foreign ID card). The Cédula costs approximately COP $267,000 (around USD $65). This step is mandatory — failing to register on time can result in fines of up to 7 times the minimum monthly wage.
Costs Summary
Here’s a realistic breakdown of what the Digital Nomad Visa costs in 2026:
The government study fee runs about USD $52 and is non-refundable regardless of the outcome. If approved, the visa issuance fee is approximately USD $177. You should budget USD $100–300 for document preparation including translations and apostilles. The Cédula de Extranjería costs roughly USD $65. Professional legal assistance, if you choose to use it, typically ranges from USD $330–800 depending on complexity.
Total estimated cost: USD $400–1,100 depending on your situation.
Tax Implications You Should Know About
This is the part most visa agencies skip entirely — and it’s arguably the most important.
If you spend more than 183 days in Colombia within any continuous 365-day period, you become a Colombian tax resident. This means you are legally obligated to declare your worldwide income to the DIAN (Colombia’s tax authority) and may owe Colombian income tax on it.
This applies regardless of whether your income comes from foreign sources. The Digital Nomad Visa does not exempt you from tax residency rules.
Many digital nomads arrive in Colombia without understanding this implication, and only discover it when they’re already liable. Proper tax planning — ideally before you arrive — can save you significant money and legal complications.
At USP Consultancy, tax compliance for foreign residents is one of our core specializations. We help digital nomads understand their obligations before they become a problem.
When the Digital Nomad Visa Might Not Be Your Best Option
Given the tightening of practical admissibility criteria, it’s worth knowing that the Digital Nomad Visa is not the only path to living legally in Colombia. Depending on your profile and goals, you may be better served by a different visa category:
If you’re planning to invest in Colombian real estate, the Investor Visa (Type M) may be more appropriate — the 2026 investment threshold is approximately USD $166,000 in property (350 times the minimum wage).
If you’re looking to start or acquire a business in Colombia, the Business Visa requires an investment of approximately USD $47,000 (100 times the minimum wage).
If you have a stable pension or retirement income, the Pensioner Visa (Type M) has lower income requirements and a clearer approval path.
If you’re unsure which category fits your situation, we offer a free initial assessment to review your profile and recommend the most viable option.
