Comprehensive Medical Coverage & Visa Compliance
Securing the right health insurance in Colombia is essential not only for your peace of mind but as a mandatory requirement for a legal stay. Whether you need local EPS affiliation, premium Prepaid Medicine, or an international policy, we design a coverage strategy that safeguards your well-being while ensuring absolute compliance with Colombian immigration laws. Protect your health and your residency status with a policy perfectly tailored to your expat lifestyle.
Why You Need Specialized Health Insurance
Securing health insurance is essential because it is mandatory to meet and exceed the official requirements for your Colombian visa application.
A visa-compliant health policy is necessary to ensure that you have comprehensive protection while in Colombia. Specifically, the coverage is required to handle critical situations such as medical emergencies, hospitalization, and repatriation.
Furthermore, different visa applicants—whether digital nomads, retirees, investors, or residents—have unique profiles that require tailored coverage (such as support for pre-existing conditions for retirees) to ensure they have the necessary support while fulfilling their visa obligations.
Health Coverage &
Immigration Compliance.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Resolution 5477) mandates comprehensive health insurance for all visa applicants. We ensure your policy meets strict legal standards regardless of your visa category.
Why is this critical for everyone?
In recent years, Colombian immigration authorities have significantly tightened regulations regarding foreigner health coverage. The goal is to ensure that temporary visitors and residents do not burden the public health system.
The most common mistake: Applicants often submit standard travel insurance or credit card coverage. These are summarily rejected because they lack specific clauses required by Colombian law, such as unlimited coverage within national territory or explicit repatriation terms.
The "Repatriation" Clause?
This is the single most important technical requirement for any visa type (Student, Work, Partner, etc.). Your certificate must explicitly state coverage for:
- Medical Repatriation: Transport to your home country in case of severe illness.
- Mortal Remains: Transport of body/ashes in case of death.
EPS (Public Health) does not cover repatriation. Therefore, even if you are eligible for EPS, you still need a private policy for the visa application.
Core Policy Requirements
Regardless of your specific visa category, your health insurance document must verify the following criteria to be accepted by the Cancillería.
Coverage Zone
Must explicitly include "Colombia" or be a "Worldwide" policy. Regional policies excluding Colombia are invalid.
Validity Period
The policy must be active for at least one (1) year from the date of visa issuance, or for the total duration of your intended stay.
Scope of Risk
Must cover hospitalization, surgery, disability, maternity (if applicable), and emergency care.
Format
Certificate must be in Spanish or English (or officially translated) and clearly show the insured's full name.
Universal Scope of Application
This requirement is transversal to the Colombian immigration regime. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs enforces this standard across all major visa classifications.

Strategic Considerations for All Applicants
Family Groups & Beneficiaries
If you are applying with beneficiaries (spouse, children), each individual must have their own certificate of coverage. A policy that only names the primary holder, even if it covers "family", may be rejected if beneficiaries are not explicitly listed on the declaration page.
Timing Your Purchase
Do not buy a policy starting "today". The policy start date should align with your estimated visa approval or entry date. However, the certificate must be active or ready to activate at the moment of application upload.
Deductibles & Co-pays
While the Ministry does not explicitly regulate deductible amounts, we advise against policies with excessively high deductibles (e.g., >$5,000 USD). Officers may view this as "insufficient solvency" to access healthcare if an emergency actually occurs.
Pre-Existing Conditions
For older applicants or those with chronic conditions, standard travel insurance often excludes pre-existing issues. This can be grounds for rejection if the officer believes you will become a burden on the state. Seek specialized "Expat" health plans that cover maintenance medication.
Compliance Workflow
Select Coverage
Choose a plan that explicitly includes Repatriation and meets the 1-year validity minimum required by Colombian law.
Obtain Certificate
Request the "Summary of Benefits" or "Visa Letter" from the insurer. Ensure it is in PDF format and clearly states your name.
Upload to Cancillería
Submit the document under the "Health Insurance" tab in the digital visa application portal during your filing process.
Entry Verification
Upon arrival in Colombia, immigration officers may ask to see printed proof of your active coverage. Keep a copy handy.
